Typical Flammulated Owl breeding habitat is mature Interior Douglas-fir (IDF) forest with scattered large ponderosa pine ( Pinus ponderosa ) (McCallum 1994). WebBird Distribution notes a few confirmed Flammulated Owls near Missoula, Helena, and Bozeman (Lenard et al. 2003). Our 2005 survey efforts yielded 243 detections and revealed Flammulated Owls to be widely distributed across western Montana and north -central Idaho.
